MYSTAGOGY
Each school Eucharistic celebration is followed by the process called mystagogy. This is the time of allowing all who participated to reflect on their experience. Invite the students to use all their senses to concentrate on the total experience of the service-what they saw, heard, gestured, participated in, sung, and so on. Use the following process:
•1. Have the children close their eyes and remember what happened. You may want to talk through the service yourself and have the children simply remember.
•2. Have the children tell you what they remember. Use this as a time for brainstorming. Can they reconstruct the service for you and tell you what was important to them?
•3. Ask them what the liturgy meant to them. Was there something that happened that connected with their own life?
•4. Ask them to describe how they are feeling or how they felt during the celebration. It is important to go for feeling words-sad, happy, awestruck, confused, and so on.
•5. Finally, have them ask any question they may have. Understand that you don't have to have all the answers but tell them you will find out the answer, or together you might do some research.
•6. Close with a prayer from the service and ask the children to remember silently, in their hearts, something very special about this service and how this will affect their relationship with God.
